ALLA XXIV EDIZIONE DEI GIOCHI INTERNAZIONALI
DEI GRUPPI SPORTIVI DELLE SCUOLE CATTOLICHE

Domenica, 6 agosto 1972

Il nostro saluto a voi, cari alunni delle Scuole cattoliche di numerosi Paesi europei, che partecipate in questi giorni, a Roma, alla XXIV edizione dei Giochi Internazionali, che possiamo ben chiamare le vostre Olimpiadi! Ci fa molto piacere trovarvi qui: anzitutto perché codesta iniziativa, sorta nel 1946 con profondo intuito pedagogico, mira a formare in ciascuno di voi una armoniosa ed equilibrata personalità umana: effettivamente, lo sport, quando è praticato nella diretta partecipazione alle sue varie specializzazioni, è un coefficiente validissimo di maturazione completa dell’uomo, perché esige generoso ardimento e oculato autocontrollo, padronanza di sé e rispetto degli altri, impegno agonistico e spirito comunitario. Per questo la Chiesa ne incoraggia e avvalora l’esercizio, come voi ben sapete.

Ma ci è tanto gradita la vostra presenza, anche e specialmente perché siete alunni di Scuole cattoliche: e perciò favoriti, dalla formazione che ricevete, ad avere una profonda visione cristiana del mondo, della cultura, della storia, che dovrà orientarvi sempre, sostenervi nelle lotte della vita, rendervi figli fedeli della Chiesa e cittadini esemplari.

Vi auguriamo di cuore di profittare dei mezzi, veramente preziosi, che avete a disposizione per giungere non solo a traguardi effimeri, ma a quelli che sono gli unici che contano, nel tempo e per l’eternità: e di cuore vi benediciamo tutti, unitamente alle vostre famiglie, agli educatori, ed all’intera Federazione Internazionale Sportiva dell’Insegnamento Cattolico.

We wish to say a word also to the English-speaking participants of the Twenty-fourth International Games. We hope that your experience in athletics is helping you to understand that in every area of life it is necessary to use all of your talents and energies. Only in that way is it possible to attain your goals. We are confident that the training and discipline required of you will assist you for the rest of your lives. We pray that the Lord will be with you always and sustain you in friendship with himself and in the service of all mankind.

Wir freuen Uns über Euren kurzen Besuch, den Ihr Uns am heutigen Sonntag hier in Castel Gandolfo abstattet. Das internationale sportliche Treffen, zu dem Ihr Euch aus zehn verschiedenen europäischen Nationen in Rom zusammengefunden habt, mögen für Euch Tage echter brüderlicher Begegnung werden. Sie mögen Euch über alle nationalen Grenzen und Unterschiede hinaus untereinander zu bleibender Freundschaft verbinden und Euer gegenseitiges Verständnis und den Geist brüderlicher Solidarität vertiefen. Dies sei Unser besonderer Segenswunsch für Euch wahrend dieser XXIV. (vierundzwanzigsten) Internationalen Spiele.

Soyez les bienvenus, chers Jeunes de langue française, vous qui avez la grande joie de participer, ainsi que vos dévoués professeurs et moniteurs, aux 24e Jeux Internationaux de la Fédération sportive de l’Enseignement catholique.

Nous connaissons l’enthousiasme et la générosité dont vous êtes capables, et nous vous encourageons de tout cœur à faire de votre vie, encore a son aurore, un joyeux et fidèle service du Seigneur et de vos frères humains, loin du conformisme et de la médiocrité!

C’est dans ces sentiments, qu’au terme de cette heureuse rencontre, nous vous donnerons notre affectueuse et confiante Bénédiction Apostolique.

También a vosotros, amadísimos jóvenes de lengua española, os saludamos con paterno afecto. Que estos encuentros deportivos os hagan descubrir más y más la unión profunda de todos en la caridad de Cristo y sea ésta la que anime vuestros ideales. Con nuestra Bendición Apostólica.

We are happy to welcome a group of teachers from Jamaica. We hope that your travels through Europe will deepen in you the awareness of the Church’s rich and varied history. For the faith of the People of God over the centuries has expressed itself in cathedrals and churches, in monuments and works of art. Every nation and every culture has made a unique contribution in giving visible witness to the mysteries of our salvation. We pray that your own faith will be strengthened by what you see and that you will return home with a joyful enthusiasm and willingness to share the fruit of your experiences here. May the Lord be with you and grant you his protection, his peace and his love always. May he bless all the people of Jamaica.
