DISCORSO DEL SANTO PADRE PAOLO VI
A SETTE NUOVI CARDINALI
Sabato, 29 maggio 1976
Nella mattinata di oggi il Santo Padre riceve in separate udienze i seguetni sette nuovi Cardinali:
La rivediamo volentieri, Signor Cardinale Giuseppe Maria Sensi (1), dopo le solenni celebrazioni tenute in questi giorni, in occasione della sua elevazione alla dignità cardinalizia insieme con gli altri degnissimi Prelati che abbiam chiamati a far parte del Sacro Collegio; e vediamo volentieri con Lei l’eletta schiera dei suoi familiari e concittadini, venuti a farle corona in questa circostanza.
Ci piace ricordare in questo momento il servizio, sempre fedelissimo, che Ella in lunghi anni ha prestato alla Sede di Pietro: e in questa nota - la fedeltà a tutta prova - Ci pare di vedere ben sintetizzato il significato dell’avvenimento che, con la creazione dei nuovi Cardinali, ha polarizzato l’attenzione di tutto il mondo. Anche Lei, Signor Cardinale, nella sua lunga attività in ruoli silenziosi e delicati, a noi ben noti, ha servito la Chiesa nella fedeltà, piena e leale.
E ci piace altresì veder premiate, col singolare segno di riconoscimento a Lei conferito, la fede e la virtù della sua città, l’antica e gloriosa Cosenza, non meno che della sua regione d’origine, la Calabria, terra aspra e generosa, ricca d’uomini forti, parchi, pazienti, laboriosi.
A tutta quella cara popolazione, così degnamente qui rappresentata da un suo degno figlio e da codesta nobile accolta di persone, va il nostro pensiero, il nostro augurio, la nostra benedizione.
Successivamente Paolo VI riceve in udienza il Cardinale Corrado Bafile con i familiari e un gruppo di concittadini. Il Papa così parla ai presenti.
Diamo il benvenuto più cordiale a Lei, Signor Cardinale Corrado Bafile, (2) e a quanti, suoi familiari e concittadini, L’accompagnano in questa circostanza, dopo aver spiritualmente vissuto insieme con Lei le sante e forti emozioni di questi giorni, in cui L’abbiamo chiamata a far parte, con altri benemeriti Presuli, del Sacro Collegio dei Cardinali di Santa Romana Chiesa.
È stato un riconoscimento per Lei, che si è prodigato e continua a prodigarsi senza risparmio di energie, nell’obbedienza a Pietro e per il bene della Chiesa; è stato altresì un incoraggiamento per i suoi ottimi collaboratori nel Dicastero che Le abbiamo affidato da qualche tempo, quello che con esami rigorosissimi e con amore sollecito ci coadiuva nello studio e nel coronamento finale, esaltante e glorioso - pregustamento della gioia celeste - delle Cause dei Santi.
Ma nel chiamarla a condividere ancor più da vicino, con gli altri Cardinali, le Nostre quotidiane sollecitudini, noi. siamo stati lieti di dare anche un riconoscimento alla sua terra di origine: all’Abruzzo tenace, gentile e pio; all’Aquila, la città della Madonna di Collemaggio, quella che custodisce nei suoi templi stupendi le spoglie di San Bernardino da Siena e di San Celestino V, Pietro del Morrone, Nostro Predecessore. Il patrimonio di fede vissuta, che impreziosisce i vostri conterranei, è degno di ogni lode: sappiate che il Papa li stima grandemente, li ricorda nella preghiera, li incoraggia a tener sempre alti i valori che rendono grande un popolo: l’amore a Cristo e al suo Vangelo, l’attaccamento alla Chiesa, l’esempio quotidiano della virtù.

Liebe Söhne und Töchter!
Es bedeutet für Uns eine besondere Freude, Sie heute hier empfangen zu können.
Ihnen, verehrter Herr Kardinal, erneuern Wir zu Ihrer ehrenvollen Berufung in das Heilige Kardinalskollegium Unsere aufrichtigen Glück - und Segenswünsche. Wir wissen um Ihre wertvolle Tätigkeit in den vergangenen Jahren bei der Kongregation für das katholische Bildungswesen und schätzen Ihre weitere Mitarbeit als Kardinal.
Auch Ihnen allen, liebe Söhne und Töchter, gilt in dieser Stunde Unser herzlicher Willkommgruss. In Ihner sehen Wir nicht nur eine würdige Vertretung der altehrwürdigen Diözese von Eichstätt, sondern des gesamten von Uns sehr geschätzten katholischen Deutschlands. Denn die Ernennung von Mons. Schröffer zum Mitglied des höchsten Senats der Kirche ist eine hohe Auszeichnung für Ihr ganzes Vaterland. Möge sich dadurch die Verbundenheit aller deutschen Katholiken mit dem Stuhle Petri festigen und jeder von Ihnen wachsen in der Liebe und Treue zu Christus und seinem sichtbaren Stellvertreter. Dazu Ihnen allen aus der Fülle des Herzens Unseren Apostolischen Segen.

With the appointment of Cardinal Jaime L. Sin (4) we have had once again the joy of naming a Filipino Cardinal, as well as the opportunity of showing our immense affection for the entire country. We recall with reverence the memory of Cardinal Santos, who was very dear to us in the Lord.
And with your presence here today, we relive those wonderful hours that we spent together in Manila. They were moments of deep ecclesial communion, when we came among you-as we told you at the time-to proclaim Jesus Christ and to announce his sanctifying, liberating and uplifting Gospel. Our message to you today is the very same. And as we continue to proclaim Christ, we ask the response of your Christian conduct, the fidelity of your Baptismal commitment. How often we have recalled the dignity of your mission and your destiny: the Philippines, a great beacon of light-the light of Christ-in the Far East!
This is why, with the Apostle Paul, our exhortation is for ever pressing: “I plead with you . . . to live a life worthy of the calling you have received” (Eph. 4, 1).
Through you we send our cordial greetings to the authorities of your country and to all who so kindly welcomed us in Manila. We have a special remembrance for the community at Tondo, for the representatives of the mass media and for the students. We hope that the students still remember our words: “We greet you with the deepest loving interest and with all our paternal affection . . . Your responsibility is supreme for the future of your nation”.
To all the beloved clergy, religious and laity we impart our Apostolic Blessing.

The entire Church in Washington is in our thoughts today.
The entire American nation is in our prayers. Through you, Cardinal Baum, we send our special greetings to the Bishops: priests, deacons, religious, seminarians, and laity of the Capital of the United States.
Our joy is complete as we welcome also our beloved brother, Cardinal O’Boyle; by his presence with you he gives expression to the continuity of apostolic unity.
And today, more than ever before, we are one in Christ. We are one Church, formed and strengthened by the Eucarist, source and summit of all Christian life (Cfr. Lumen Gentium, 11). We are one in the love of God’s word, one in faith.
As Successor of Peter, our hope at this moment is to confirm you in this faith in Jesus Christ the Son of the living God, so that you may go out from this City of Rome with a greater consciousness of the importance of his words: “This is the work of God: have faith in the One whom he sent” (Io. 6, 29).
As a strong local Church, may you give-by word and exemplea united witness to the Lord Jesus, who alone is our wisdom, our justice, our sanctification and our redemption (Cfr. 1 Cor. 1, 30). It is he alone whom we preach to the world.
With deep paternal affection we impart our Apostolic Blessing.
Nel corso dell’udienza al Cardinale Reginald John Delargey (6), Arcivescovo di Wellington, Paolo VI rivolge ai presenti il seguente discorso.
We are always pleased to have visitors from New Zealand.
So often we have assured them that the great geographical distance of separation is but the gauge of spiritual closeness. At no time are we closer to our beloved sons and daughters in your country than during this Consistory celebration, in which we have appointed the Archbishop of Wellington as a Cardinal. In you, Cardinal Delargey, we wish to honour all New Zealand.
Through the opportunities afforded us in our ministry we have had personal contact with the hierarchy and many individuals. Above all we evoke with respect the memory of Cardinal McKeefry, for whom we had great esteem and affection. We likewise recall pilgrims of the Holy Year, representatives of the Government, the delegation of the Maori people-to all of whom we expressed our friendship and deep interest.
And today we renew our love and esteem for the Archdiocese of Wellington, for the entire Church in New Zealand; we send our cordial greetings to all the citizens.
Upon you personally we invoke the wisdom and fortitude of the Holy Spirit, enabling you to continue to lead your people in the ways of holiness and justice, and to preach incessantly “the unsearchable riche of Christ” (Eph. 3, 8). We pray that this joyous occasion will be an hour of renewed resolve for the Archdiocese of Wellington and for the three other dioceses-renewed resolve in the cause of evangelization, which is the great inheritance of the Holy Year.
To the clergy, religious and laity we willingly impart our Apostolic Blessing.
Infine il Santo Padre riceve in udienza il Cardinale Basil Hume (7), Arcivescovo di Westminster, accompagnato dai familiari. A questo gruppo Paolo VI cosi si rivolge.
On this day of joy we extend greetings to the venerable Church of Westminster and to you, its worthy pastor, Cardinal George Basil Hume : “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ibid. 1, 2).
We are happy to have this occasion to tell you how close we are to you and to all the clergy, religious and laity of the Archdiocese and of all England and Wales. We are pleased that you have come from the great tradition of evangelical spirituality which is that of Saint Benedict, and we are convinced that after the pattern of his counsels you will give strong ecclesial leadership with that discretion and kindness that are expressions of Christ’s love. We are confident that you will show strength linked with gentleness, zeal without anxiety, prudence without timidity, ever seeking “the kingdom of God and his justice” (Matth. 6, 33).
In this celebration of our unity in Christ and in his Church, we renew to you the full measure of benevolence that the Church of Rome has always reserved for the Church in England and Wales. As Successor of Peter we embrace you with the same affection with which our predecessors sent forth a whole band of Benedictine apostles to preach Christ.
Venerable Brother: “Let us not lose sight of Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection” (Hebr. 12, 2).
